Katelyn and Justin will be married this coming fall.  October is personally my favorite month of the year so I can’t wait to share in their big day!  This lovely couple braved the 20 degree weather to run around the Esch Road beach area and other parts of The County with me.

The thing about winter in Michigan is that you just never know what you are going to get.  The best you can do is just go and see what Mother Nature hands you.  This day, we were handed light winds, no snow, and plain grey skies.  I’m not a big fan of just plain old grey skies!  Here is an example of my creative editing progression.  First I thought, ahhh, snow will do it.  But that just didn’t spice it up enough for me.  How about some clouds?  Getting better.  How about some color in those clouds?  Hmmmm, I like.  Let’s push it and go for broke.  Perhaps a little overkill, pretty, though.  Let’s try a mid-contrast black and white.  I love black and white!  But after all that thinking, I can’t just pick one to put in the gallery.  I like them all.  They should all be included.  The major problem is this is my thought process for everything I see.  So if you ever see me lost in thought somewhere looking at things, likely with a super stupid look on my face, this progression shows you why.

Jane and Brad used a friend’s home on Lake Leelanau for their intimate wedding ceremony.  It was a perfect day for it, too!

This lovely couple was shot by Zachariah Smith, one of my senior second shooters.

What a fantastic family!  Grandma Sal should be so proud of this group!

Sally and Chad (and the pupster too) are planning a Leelanau county wedding in July of this year.  We took some time to explore the beach and a few locations close to the wedding venue.  It was a glorious early May day!

May Sales 2015 2

One of my favorite times of the year is the week of cherry blossoms. Depending on when (yes, in Michigan is a very uncertain WHEN) spring actually begins, determines when the cherry blossoms are going to be the best. In past years, right around the middle of May has been when the trees are in full bloom. However, if spring comes early, they will peak in the first half of the month, if spring comes late, they will peak in the last half of the month. This year I would like to plan ahead and see what we can get scheduled in for family photos, engagement sittings, and child/baby shoots. Sooooo, for the ENTIRE month of May I will be running a special package for every sitting we do in a cherry orchard!!

March 17, 2015 – The hype was everywhere! They northern lights were supposed to be better than they have been for years! So I took a nap late in the day and planned to see amazing things in the wee hours of the morning. BUT . . . yes, there were northern lights, but really they were just regular old northern lights, nothing extra spectacular. Only a few fingers shooting here and there and a few shooting stars. The upside was that I got to test out my new Baffin snow boots that I have wanted for years and only splurged on buying at the end of winter this year. The boots did great, in fact in the 20 degree weather, while listening to the young (drunk on St. Patty’s Day) folks down the beach whining about being cold, I was toasty warm. I even had to open my jacket. Good Harbor beach on Lake Michigan was calm and dark. It was a beautiful night.

March 17, 2015 – Star Trails are my new obsession. I think I have it dialed in now. I found a software that compiles each of my frames together. I’m seeing that the more exposures I come back with the better and more prominent the trails are. These are 30 second exposures over 1 hour. I think I need to boost it up to 2 hours next time. Good thing warmer weather is coming!
